The problem with salt
Most of us eat too much of it without knowing it. Here are some simple ways to reduce your intake.
Did you know that adults need to try and limit their salt intake to 6g a day? In fact, most of us have, on average, about 9.5g a day. Too much salt in your food has been linked to raised blood pressure, which in turn increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.
At Heinz we’re working hard to reduce the levels of salt in our foods. You can also help keep your families salt intake down by:
- Cutting out or reducing the amount of salt you add during cooking and at the table.
- Cutting down on salty foods such as crisps, bacon, salted nuts and sausages.
- Looking at the salt (sodium) content of foods before you buy them (0.5g or more of sodium per 100g is a lot).
- Choosing canned vegetables that say ‘no added salt’.
- Cutting down on salt-heavy foods – always check the back of the pack for information on salt levels and look out for alternatives such as 'reduced sugar & salt' varieties of products.
- Using low-salt stock cubes to make gravy and sauces.
